Now, I have to be honest, I saw the results of the biopsy on the patient portal for the health system that the place I got my biopsy used. I saw that I had cancer before the doctor actually called me. Now, some of you are saying ‘that’s terrible’. For me it wasn’t and here’s why. I got the results. Immediately looked it up on line. I had time to process what I learned. For me, that was the best thing because I was ready for the doctor to call me and tell me that my life was going to look a little different. I won’t be taken off guard. I had gotten the biopsy on Friday and this was Monday. When I saw it was cancer I wanted it out. Cancer grows and messes with other things. Get it out!!! Was the only thing I was focused on. So that same week, on Wednesday, I was in the general surgeons office. Again, some of you may asking why I wasn’t going to a breast specialist for this surgery. This surgery, a lumpectomy, is pretty standard. Meaning its not ‘special’ so why go to a specialist? I live in a very rural part of Pennsylvania and a ‘specialist’ is more than an hour away. I had confidences that the general surgeon at the local hospital would be able with remove it. I was scheduled for a lumpectomy and a sentinel lymph biopsy with needle localization the following week. So what that means is, they were going to use a needle and place a wire into the tumor so the surgeon would know exactly where to go to remove it. They also injected nucleotides to visualize the pathways from the breast to the lymph nodes. And, they injected a blue dye to help ‘see’ the lymph nodes because they would have absorbed the blue dye. Day of the surgery, I wore my queen’s crown because I was given cancer it’s first eviction notice. Get it out!!!! The surgery took a little longer than expected. I did well. Got out of the hospital and was on my way to getting started to get finished with this whole things. I was pretty worried about going to Baltimore at the end of the month for school if treatment was already started. But we would cross that bridge when we came to it. I would not have to worry about treatment while away, because I had some complications. Next I will tell you about the nurse curse (oh it’s a real thing).
